A childish game.

August 21, 2024 by Adam Mazek

When I’m out on the streets and doing street photography, it’s like I’m playing a game. A game that’s innocent, naive, and full of joy. This is the essence of street photography for me.

I wrote this text on the 13th of July, 2023. It was a usual day when I was doing street photography. While doing this, I realized, not for the first time in my life, that taking pictures on Warsaw’s streets is a naive, childish game for me. Without having fun, there is no street photography. I would go even further. I believe we could say without fun, there is no art. Without enjoying creating new things, people would not do it. I do not have children. Still, as far as I remember and see, kids can spontaneously take enjoyment and pleasure from most things they do. They have unlimited imagination.

While doing street photography, I want to cherish a kid living deep in me. Often, this kid is hidden deep inside me.

Still, thanks to street photography, I know I can evoke this kid in my imagination and have tremendous fun while doing a childish game named street photography. In street photography, I trust. I know I wrote many similar texts in the past, and this post is not groundbreaking. Still, if something is worth repeating, I do it. I wish you, my Dear Friend, to find an activity thanks to which you will also find, evoke, and cherish a little kid living deep inside you.

I do not know how to do it.

Still, I believe we should try to find in our earliest memories what brought us magnificent, childish joy. We simply should ask ourselves what we genuinely like to do. Or, if we cannot find the answer, perhaps we should start to get rid of activities we honestly do not want to do. Seeking otherness in mundane reality makes the kid living deep inside me bloom every time I walk and take photos.
