In today’s post, I will write about another unresolved debate. This time it won’t be connected with Universe but with the human body.
Where in the human body is placed an ephemeral, unmaterial, perhaps divine, soul? The ancient Greek anatomists Herophilos of Chalcedon and Erasistratus of Ceos discovered critical anatomical structures and connections between, among others, the brain and both the eye and nerves. They located the seat of the mind and soul in the brain rather than the heart. Regarding the mind, no one doubts that its center is the brain. Still, the seat of the soul is another unresolved debate, needed to be explained.
First of all, one should ask if such an immaterial, abstract thing as a soul, indeed, exists.
We feel that we have a soul, but we cannot map it with our physical body.
The latest imaging technologies map the brain in its entirety. Still, they cannot find evidence for either the nature of the soul and its precise anatomical location. The truth is that I often was wondering where the soul is placed, but like all other humans, I cannot give a hint to resolve this unresolved debate. I was inspired to write this text because I remembered one of the greatest Polish punk bands, “Dezerter,” released in 1994 an album named “Ile procent duszy?” (“How many percent of the soul?”).
There was a song included there with the same name as the entire album.
The conclusions of the music were sad. Punk artists stated there is no place for the soul in the human body. Most likely, the matter of the location of the human soul is only the matter of beliefs. Thus, we will never solve this unresolved debate, like we never get to know why humans appeared in this world and what is the future of the entire Universe.
