Can evil be beautiful?

June 1, 2019 by Adam Mazek

Indeed, evil can be beautiful. To write this post, I am inspired because, in August 2018, I read Leo Tolstoy’s “The Kreutzer Sonata” novel.

In his book, a famous Russian writer wrote, among other things, about beauty. Tolstoy wrote that vision could be a trickster. But how? Russian novelist gave an example of a beautiful woman. In general, a beautiful woman does not have to be good. She can possess a lot of evil inside her (indeed, like all other people). Tolstoy gave an example that if an attractive woman talks bullshit, we listen and admire. We do not see stupidity but wisdom. Her visual perfection can make us dumb. Even if she does and talks about disgusting things, we can hear beautiful things.

For me, it is generally proven that beauty can be a trickster’s evil.

A famous Russian novelist also wrote that even if a beautiful woman does not talk any stupid or embarrassing things and is still pretty, we are convinced that she is intelligent and moral. We believe that such a beautiful woman cannot be evil. I wrote about a beautiful woman only because Leo Tolstoy gave such an example in this post. A similar thing can be matched with a handsome man.

One of the cases which came to my mind is Leonardo di Caprio’s central role in Martin Scorsese’s movie “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

For me, a pretty similar case is with photography. I do like sad pictures because they do not want to trick you. There is no hidden evil there. Disturbing, melancholic photographs are about the truth in our life. They do not want to tell you something that does not exist.

On the contrary, they strikingly show you that our reality is not beautiful but mundane or even sad. But, thanks to the fact that this kind of image does not trick you, they are not evil. For me, such photographs represent the good, not the evil.
Does it mean that all the beautiful women, handsome men, and astonishing photographs represent evil? Of course not. But do not let to be tricked by evil.

Have your eyes and mind open. Always.
