Last time I was preparing an edition of “Diaries 12.2017.” Post “Be like water” inspired me to write this post. Thus, I started, once again, a conversation with myself here on this web site.
I already wrote that art is a specific kind of continuous dialogue between generations. We can get inspiration from prior periods. Also, we can discuss or argue with them. The funny thing is that we can make conversations even with ourselves. So what exactly inspired me to write a post? In December 2017, I wrote that such geniuses like Fyodor Dostoyevski or David Bowie were also, somehow, like water. A famous Russian writer was like water in broadly defined living terms. On the other hand, the British singer showed us how to be like water in an artistic manner.
Why was Dostoyevski like water? First of all, he was sent to hard labor on the far, Asian side of Russia.
After years of punishment that he spent there, he returned and became addicted to gambling. Because of that, he had debt. This debt forced him to move with his wife to Western Europe. In the meantime, his brother died, and Dostoyevski took responsibility for financially supporting his brother’s children. And, by the way, two of four of Russian novelist’s kids died during infancy. So why Dostoyevski was like water? Because during all the time (besides time spending on hard labor), he was writing. Russian writer was creating for most of his life, despite many adversities that he met. For me, it is an astonishing example of we all can try to be creatively fertile, even though our life can be hard to bear.
What about Bowie? Well, I will write about him in the future. His artistic metamorphosis can prove to us that we can be like water in creativity. Once again, I will make a conversation with myself here on this web site. For me, developing my thoughts is another kind of having fun, like a child.
