Does making art must have rules?

May 26, 2024 by Adam Mazek

For me, making art does not have to have rules.

Of course, there are hundreds of rules in practically all art areas. Visual art has rules and teachings regarding, e.g., perspective and composition. Today, I am going to write about something other than these rules. Undoubtedly, you will find many valuable articles on the internet. Directions are helpful regarding teachings. Nevertheless, the older I am, the more experienced an artist I am, and the more I see breaking the rules as a great activity. It is not the case that I want to write about myself today (I wrote this text on the 9th of April, 2023) as a rebel who wants to break each rule I face. No. For me, rules are the wisdom of other people who did tremendous work in the past.

Rules are directions to me.

I can follow them, but I do not have to do it. Undoubtedly, the more experienced we are, the better rules we can figure out and find for ourselves. That’s why other artists’ directions are excellent, especially when beginners start to practice creating.

Nevertheless, from the beginning of my creative journey, art was (and still is!) a world of freedom for me. A world where nothing has to match each other and be explained. Obeying the rules is one of the most crucial issues in my financial job. In today’s post, I want to encourage you, my Dear Friend, to experience and learn. Learn from the rules that other artists imposed. Still, be bold in breaking their rules.

After all, the world of art is a land of choice, independence, and liberty.

If something is OK for me, it does not have to match your creative choices and decisions. Be brave and bold and follow your guts and intuition, my Dear Friend. If you feel you made the right choice, but it does not match the artistic rules, in such case, forget about other artists’ advice. Do what you feel you should do.
