I think it is a tricky question. I wrote many times that art, indeed, possesses healing powers. But, does having artworks can truly make us happy?
I believe that possessing and collecting artworks alone not necessarily can make us happy. By writing that art will improve our mental health, I do not have on my mind the fact of owning works of art. It was a mental shortcut. Today I will share precise my thoughts, and I will stress that creating art possess healing power.
I believe that creating art, the moment when humans sculpted the first sculpture of the bird, or when they started to paint animals in caves, that was the primordial act of becoming humans.
People undoubtedly possess the eternal desire to create new things. When we do something from nothing, we start to feel that we maintain the power to control surrounding us reality. Of course, I do believe that we will never gain full authority to control the world. Nevertheless, the act of creating symbolically causes that we can control a piece of reality. The act of creation still makes us humans. It does not refer only to the Stone Age times, but it is still valid today. The fact is that I feel enormous happiness when I do create new things. For example, I love to walk and take photos on the streets of Warsaw. Moreover, a lot of joy provide me both writing and preparing a new edition of “Diaries.”
Furthermore, when I create new sets of pictures (e.g., “Death,” “Ostensible Abstraction” or “Living in Poland”), I always feel entertained.
I do believe that having artworks will make us happy, but I would compare it to buying new things. It can be a similar feeling when we buy new stuff for our house. We can decor our home with paintings, sculptures and other things. By doing it, we will feel better in the place where we live. Nevertheless, I do believe that there is a significant difference between only gathering works of art and creating them.
