New York City

February 16, 2019 by Adam Mazek

Today I will write about New York City. It is one of the most magical cities I have ever been to.

The story goes to 2006. I was twenty-one years old. I went to the USA, to the West Virginia state, to work in the “Work and travel” program, dedicated to students. While being there, my other aim, except working, was having good fun, traveling, and meeting my family living in New York City. It is a unique occasion to thank them for their warm welcome and the time we spent together. It was a marvelous pleasure to see all of you. Also, thank you for showing me New York City. The city truly impressed and inspired me.

I saw New York as a city with contradictions in it. When I went there with my friend, by car, it was 1 a.m.

I saw Manhattan in the night scenery from a far away. For me, it looked like a city from outer space. It looked like a separate city that came from another world and landed on a large piece of American land. It was a truly astonishing and breathtaking view.
On the other hand, when I was coming back from NYC by plane while taking off, “Big Apple” scared me. When I saw this large city from above, I started to feel like e a little ant that escaped the giant, concrete jungle. It was the time when I began to be aware of my littleness in this world. I imagined that if I had lost or died in this concrete jungle, almost nobody would notice this fact.

When I think of New York City, the words of Grandmaster Flash’s song (“The Message”) often echoes in my mind:

It’s like a jungle sometimes
It makes me wonder how I keep from goin’ under.

Sometimes I like to listen to Alicia Key’s song about New York (titled “New York”). She sings that this city is famous for its movie scenes. And that’s right. Thanks to the fact that I was watching a lot of movies filmed in New York (Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” or John Schlesinger’s “Midnight Cowboy”!!!) while being there, I felt like I was in my hometown. This feeling was amazing.
To summarize I would like to say that if you have a chance to visit New York City, my Dear Friend, do it. There is a high possibility that you will not regret it.

PS

Pictures published in this post are the ones which I make in 2006 while being in the US.
