Non-English songs

October 6, 2021 by Adam Mazek

This text will be about non-English songs. I have already published a post entitled “Language in the music.”

In this text, I wrote that it is difficult for non-English-speaking performers to break into the universal world, musical consciousness and become worldwide famous. It is challenging to become a famous rock star among English-speakers while singing in the not-English language. I sometimes wonder how popular bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, or Guns N’ Roses would become if they would sing in Polish. I believe that such bands would become famous, but only for Polish native speakers. Still, in this post, I want to provide to all English-speakers three Polish-language-songs that (I suppose) listening to them should be an exciting experience.

The fact is that I genuinely believe that the three songs mentioned below should still be interesting for people who do not understand Polish.

So here is a shortlist of these songs (the first is the name of the band/artist; the second is the title of the song):

1) Republika – Sexy Doll

2) Sztywny Pal Azji – Wieża Radości, Wieża Samotności

3) Andrzej Zaucha – Wymyśliłem Ciebie (live, 1990)

The fact is that I wish I could three of the above songs listen to a moment as a listener who does not know Polish. I am inquisitive about how my perception of the music would look like without knowing the language. I hope that listening to this kind of music for someone who does not speak Polish would still be a captivating experience.

Like I said before, English totally dominated the world stage of music.

Only sometimes hits appear in other languages (French, Spanish or Italian). Still, such songs are rather exceptions that prove the rule. I think that the same thing is with writing. If I wrote only in Polish, I would be read-only by Polish speakers. Still, for today, I know that my blog read people from all over the world.

PS
For me, one of the best non-English and non-Polish songs is Hungarian Omega’s “Gyöngyhajú lány.”
