This text will be highly controversial, and I would classify it as political fiction. For me, Poland could become the 51st state of the US.
Not a colony but a state. The older I am, the more I think we, as a country, must be dependent, whether on the autocratic and murderous Russian regime, the European Union, the Chinese government, or the United States. For most Poles, the first option is the worst-case scenario. Like Ukrainians, we do not want to be victims and servants of the Russian nation, as happened during the partitions of Poland (my homeland was erased from world maps for 123 years) and during the communist period (1945-1989). In my opinion, being dependent on the European Union also has disadvantages, particularly regarding our sovereignty and decision-making power.
We would be under the German influence.
I cannot forgive Angela Merkel’s attitude toward buying Russian gas. Building Nord Stream gas pipelines proved that German politics had terrible intentions toward Poland. They wanted to feed Russian trolls with billions of euros for a gas that helped German economics to grow without considering Poland’s voice and fears. Indeed, for Russians, gas was the primary efficient weapon before their full-scale invasion of Ukraine on the 24th of February, 2024. I do not trust Western European politicians (indeed, I think I could say I do not trust any of the politicians, no matter the nationality). The Chinese option is unknown to me.
Still, China’s close relationship with Russia tells me I do not want their influence here.
That’s why I believe Poland should become the 51st state of the US. It’s time for a change in our international relations, a change that could bring us stability, security, and a strong ally in the face of global threats. For today, I would say we are an American colony. That’s not good for my homeland. At this moment, American politicians can simply use us as a tool without Americans’ responsibility. That’s why I would prefer my homeland to become the 51st state of the US. Do I believe in it? Of course not. After all, this text is political-fictional.
