Rita, Martha, or Julia?

May 14, 2025 by Adam Mazek

If you know the Beatles’ songs, my Dear Friend, you will undoubtedly quickly decipher the title of this post.

I wrote many times that I love listening to the Beatles’ tunes. In today’s text (I wrote it on the 28th of May, 2024), I won’t write which of the Beatles’ songs with a female name in the song’s names is the best for me. In today’s text, I want to simply emphasize my enthusiasm for listening to the Beatles. Just for clarity, if you are not too aware of the Beatles’ music, I will provide explanations for the title of this text. Rita comes from the “Lovely Rita” song sung by Paul McCartney, a playful tune about a traffic warden. This tune appeared on the “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album. Two other female names from this post’s title appeared on the so-called “White Album” (the official album’s name is simply “The Beatles”).

Again, “Martha My Dear” was sung by Paul McCartney, a song believed to be about his dog.

These songs are just a few examples of the Beatles’ diverse and imaginative songwriting. On the other hand, the song “Julia” was written and sung by John Lennon. When I hear Paul McCartney’s songs mentioned above, I have a feeling that he was simply playing with composing and singing. I hear as if making catchy tunes was something natural to him. He did it (luckily, he is still alive, so I hope he will compose something fresh within the next months and years) without any effort. On the other hand, I cannot say that contemplative John Lennon’s “Julia” is worse than Paul McCartney’s masterpieces.

The truth is that each time I listen to all these songs, I think this one is the best.

Still, when I hear the subsequent tune, I change my mind and choose the other one. So maybe others of the Beatles’ songs containing female names in their titles are better? Just to name Lucy (“Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”) or Prudence (“Dear Prudence”). I encourage you to listen to these songs and form your own opinions. There is no sense in writing which song is the best and which is the worst. It is better to simply listen to the Beatles right now.
