Selfie

Adam Mazek Photography street photography Warsaw 2018. Categories. Selfie. Minimalism.

Who among us does not like to take a photo of ourselves? I am sure that there people who would tell that they do not take selfies. I do not trust them in this case. Of course, maybe some of them don’t publish their self-portraits online. But, I am convinced that most of us do self-portraits.

Probably most of us already forgot that making self-portraits is not the invention of the social-media era. I will give you few examples of the artists who committed this kind of artistic activity: Albrecht Dürer, Vincent van Gogh, Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, Egon Schiele, René Magritte, Salvador Dalí, Frida Kahlo or Andy Warhol. The self, as a subject, is one of the fascinating artistic enterprises. Thanks to mentioned-above artists, we can analyze how this specific genre of creative activity was evolving through the history of the Art.

Why am I doing self-portraits? For me, selfies are the proof of passing the time.

Maybe, someday, during the final stage of my life, I will collect all my self-portraits, and present them in some unusual form. Nevertheless, for today, I prefer to focus “only” on producing selfies. Such pictures are somehow the proof and trace of my photographic activity. Due to this specific hobby (taking photographs on the streets of Warsaw), I often try to find some unusual, strange objects, thanks to which I can do some selfie.

Images that I present in this post are some of the examples of how can we use urban space to create some strange, almost “Boschian” self-portraits.

To summarize up: I would like to encourage you, my Dear Friend, to take selfies. Of course, I also want you to try to invent something peculiar while creating it. Do you have to do it with the mirror found on the street? Of course not. I am sure that there are a lot of proper ways to make a self-portraiture.
