Studio.

October 16, 2021 by Adam Mazek

I possess quite a similar studio to the one that Claude Monet had.

Last time I read in Daniel Wildenstein’s „Monet. The Triumph of Impressionism” book (published by Taschen), one of the highlights of the interview with Monet. A famous French painter was requested to present his own studio. Below, you will find Monet’s reaction:

My studio! I have „never” had a studio, and can’t understand how one can shut oneself up in a room. To draw, yes; to paint, no. There is „my” studio!

Monet declared the last sentence with a sweeping gesture embracing the Seine, the hills, and a small French village, named Vétheuil, as a whole. After reading it, I imagined myself gesturing over Warsaw’s blocks of flats saying:

This is my studio. Warsaw is my personal city. Indeed, I am the Warsaw.

In one of my previous posts („Impressionists”), I already mentioned many differences between Impressionists and me. I love black and white mundane photography of the urban cityscape. On the other hand, Impressionists loved painting colorful, rural landscapes. I would say that there much more differences between Impressionists and me.

Nevertheless, we have one artistic solid, common point: both Impressionists and I possess studio outdoors.

Of course, I do not take photos only in the urban landscape. The fact is that I also love to wander through the forest in Brok (so-called White Forrest). Still, creating new things outside the interior is something I merely love to do. Is that mean that I do not like my home? Of course not! I love my house, and I love living in it with my beloved Kamilka and our kitty Azorek. Still, in my house, I only write, read, and manage the www.adammazek.com website. The core of my artistic activity, photography, is happening outside the home. Speaking shortly: I feel that I possess my studio on Warsaw’s streets.
