Yesterday (I wrote this text on the 1st of December, 2022), the Polish National Football Team had a sweet defeat.
We lost against Argentina 0:2. Still, because Mexico won against Saudi Arabia only 2:1, we managed to qualify for the next stage of Mundial. We could consider the loss against Argentine as a sweet defeat. Why? Because the Polish players played horribly. They were much worse than all Argentinian players. I am trying to figure out how to explain it. Still, I cannot be content with how the Polish players qualified for the next Mundial stage for the first time since 1986. I could not watch the game against Argentina because the Polish were only extras. Speaking shortly, they were backgrounds for Leo Messi and his companions. I could not be happy because of the way they played. I know I should not worry about things I cannot influence, like how Polish players play.
Still, I am mad they could not be formidable opponents to one of the best football players worldwide. I will go out to take a freezing walk after writing this text.
I suppose I will still be thinking about Mundial while walking in frigid temperatures in summer clothes. I must admit it: Mundial excites me. Even one of the most experienced Polish football players, Kamil Glik, said he could not celebrate qualification after yesterday’s game because Polish players could not overcome Argentine anyhow. I wonder what the result against France will be. How many goals will Kylian Mbappe score against Wojciech Szczesny? I do not know it. Still, I know I will be watching this game, even if I know it will be similar to the game against Argentina. I still figure out how football and broadly defined sports may provide many stimuli in people’s minds and imaginations from every corner of this world. I would not say the 30th of November, 2022, was a historic day for Poland, even though Polish football players reached their aim.
