The art of letting go: how numbers can disturb.

October 29, 2024 by Adam Mazek

Today (I wrote this text on the 30th of September, 2023), I will explain how numbers can disturb.

I work in broadly defined Finance. Nevertheless, today, I will focus on something other than accountancy. In Finance, numbers are crucial. They have to be clear and resolved. In art, it is a totally different situation. I no longer count the number of photos I took on my photo walks.
Moreover, I’ve liberated myself from the constant monitoring of numbers. I no longer obsess over the number of footsteps I take on a single walk. I’ve broken free from the shackles of counting. I had been writing one text daily for almost one and a half years. While doing it, I wondered if I had become a victim of my own consistency. Perhaps I became one. It is not the case I do not want to be a prolific writer/blogger.

On the contrary, I want to be one of the most prolific writers/bloggers ever stomped on this planet.

But I’ve realized that sometimes, a small break from everything I do is advisable. I’ve learned to strike a balance between productivity and personal fulfillment. I do not count how many photos I’ve added to my website. I do not care how many posts I have published since I started managing the www.adammazek.com website (I launched it on the 1st of September, 2017). In one of my previous posts, I’ve already written to kick the numbers out of the art world. Of course, all these things do not mean I never watch all these numbers. Sometimes, I do.

Nevertheless, I do not want to be a slave to a number on the same level as many people on Instagram accounts. I do not care how many followers I have. What matters to me is the satisfaction I derive from my writing, not the number of people who read it. I write what I want to read, not what the broadly defined audience wants. I hope I explained why numbers can disturb in art world.
