The element of randomness.

May 12, 2025 by Adam Mazek

The element of randomness was, is, and will be the crucial factor in my approach to street photography.

The older and more experienced I am, the more I see that the element of randomness is impossible to avoid, not only in street photography but in life in general. When I go out, I do not have any specific plan of where to go. I would say my street photography method is walking on a road to nowhere (similar to life). When I go nowhere, it means I can go anywhere. If I can go anywhere, it means the usual randomness will take place. Invariably, when something is happening (e.g., a strike or march in the city center), I take such a direction to avoid crowds. Still, I never know what I will find on Warsaw’s streets. Whether it will be an old rag whose shape recalls something, an old, destroyed building, or a killed bird.

And it’s this sense of wonder, this curiosity about the unexpected, that inspires me in street photography.

Regarding the last one, I think I still haven’t published a dead animal on the www.adammazek.com website. Still, I have some pictures to present in this matter. For today (I wrote this text on the 26th of May, 2024), I do not know why I would show images of dead birds or rats. Also, another element of randomness is the weather. If I plan to go and do street photography, I don’t care about the weather. Okay, I sometimes prefer to stay at home if there are scorching heat waves.

Still, it is not me who will choose what the weather will be like during the upcoming hours. Luckily, I cannot influence it anyhow. I am not a demigod. I cannot influence what will happen in my surroundings within the next hours or even minutes. After all, the element of randomness rules the world. Accepting this randomness and this lack of control is what brings me peace and reassurance in life.
