I do not like television. For me, it is one of the best examples (similar to scrolling on smartphones) of passive entertainment. These two above mentioned activities do not require any specific brain efforts.
On the contrary, TV is fast food for the brain. By watching it, you don’t provide into your mind much valuable information. You watch this, what large corporations want you to view. Television brings you a lot of unnecessary things which are calculated only to gain money for big firms. Speaking shortly: I do not watch TV. For me, it is a waste of time. I am not like the main character of Genesis’ song, “Turn it on again.” I do not need another TV show. Moreover, I do not identify with the heroes from the movies. I had never dreamt of knowing some celebrities from our colorful, enormous TV screens.
Besides Genesis’ example of the song, another of my favorite song regarding television is David Bowie’s “TVC 15”.
Famous British singer composed this piece of music after hearing about Iggy Pop’s acid-induced hallucination. In this narcotic vision, Iggy saw the television set consuming his girlfriend. In his artwork, Bowie also demonizes the TV. How? By singing that the narrator’s girlfriend is being crawled into the TV set. When she got there, the narrator also jump-in into the television.
It is television. We often stick to it blankly, without any deep thoughts and plans. Practically unconsciously.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, a similar situation is also with smartphones. More and more people stare at their little screens and scroll down all the time. Unfortunately, I am not an exception. Often, I try to minimalize thoughtless scrolling. How much it is better to read your favorite book, write another blog post, take a walk outside your house, and take some pictures. Or, hug your loved one and tell that you love her/him.
