Virtual enchanted pencil

May 30, 2020 by Adam Mazek

I am inspired to write this post because last time, I was preparing an edition of Diaries of March 2018. While doing it, I realized that I possess a new virtual enchanted pencil.

This post refers to the post from the past in which I wrote that during reading Dostoyevski’s, Lem’s, or Mann’s (and others) novels, I used a pencil to mark favorite quotations of geniuses mentioned above. I did not know why I did it. Nevertheless, I was consequently doing it, hoping that maybe it will be helpful for me in the future. Today is the future. The time had already come to use some quotations from the past to write things on this web site.

Did anything change regarding marking favorite quotes in books? The answer is not straightforward.

The fact is that I still read quite a lot. Also, I always mark quotes. Nevertheless, today, I rarely use a pencil. Today I make notes on my smartphone. Why? There are two reasons why I use my virtual enchanted pen. First of all, using a smartphone to mark quotes (by writing a page on my e-mail sent to myself, with the more detailed information about localization of the quote) is much convenient for me. The fact is that since I read mainly Taschen books, I do not want to write anything on these books. Of course, I still sometimes do it, but I try to focus on writing in my virtual enchanted pencil.

The fact that I rarely use a classic pen to mark my favorite quotations is not a crucial issue for me. The most important is the fact that I still read, and I am still enjoying marking quotes with the hope that I will refer to them in the future. What about you, my Dear Friend? Do you possess your virtual enchanted pencil?
