For the most time, I thought that I knew about Dostoyevsky lot. In 2013 I read almost all his books translated into my mother tongue, Polish.
Moreover, at the beginning of 2014, I read five books about Dostoyevsky. Thus, I was sure that I knew almost everything about the famous Russian writer.
Nevertheless, now I know that I was utterly wrong. Neither I nor anybody else could fully understand Dostoyevsky’s heart, mind, and soul. In almost all novels, we can find that the human’s soul is a divine, impossible-to-solve mystery. The fact is that it is impossible to understand one’s soul by 100%. Therefore, even though I got to know a large part of Dostoyevsky’s mind and soul, thanks to his letters and books, I still can not say that I know him.
In the end, no one from us knows ourselves.
We can write tons of letters, essays, novels, and diaries about ourselves, but there are always undiscovered parts of the human soul. Discovering the human soul and mind is similar to exploring the Universe. We can make progress, and undoubtedly we will do it regarding researches. But, in the end, we cannot fully understand all the processes which occur in the cosmos and the human brain and soul.
So, should we stop doing it? Of course not!
I believe that discovering both people’s minds and the vastness of the Universe is one of the most exciting things which we, as a civilization, can do. Indeed, exploring the human soul and the Universe is one constant process that will last till the end of our Civilization. To summarize, I want to stress that even though I read many of Dostoyevski’s books and about him, it is impossible to understand him fully. Moreover, it’s impossible to understand the soul and mind of every one of us.
