I am not a teacher. I do not know how the best education system should work.
Despite not being a teacher or not having a proper solution for the education system’s significant error, these facts cannot prevent me from writing about it. So what’s the considerable failure of the schooling system? For me, it is teaching kids what to think and not how to think. The sad fact of most of the education systems is that these systems are pigeonholing young people. For example, historical facts can be interpreted in many various ways. There can be a lot of opinions and points of view regarding one similar event. The school’s purpose should not impose the one “proper” point of view but to inspire pupils to observe and analyze the circumstance from various perspectives.
Thanks to this exercise, young people should find out their personal opinion about a specific subject.
In the world, nothing is black or white. There are many grey shades, and people should possess an open mind for everything in their lives. It should be the education system’s aim to teach young people to own and remain open mind. As far as I know and hear from people involved, the education system is not focused on teaching kids how to think. Unfortunately, schools are focusing on teaching young people what to think.
A similar case as with historical facts we can find in preparing interpretations of schoolbooks, including novels and poems.
I completed my secondary school-leaving examination in 2004. Since that time, I heard that pupils had to interpret many poems or novels during such exams. The worst thing is that I heard that many young people did not pass because they did not interpret writers’ and poets’ works correctly. For me, it is a significant, sad error of the schooling system.
