Why do I write short texts?

September 16, 2020 by Adam Mazek

The reason why I write short texts is quite apparent.

The SEO application, named Yoast that I use from the very beginning of running this website, is continually giving me a hint that my writing should consist of a minimum of three hundred words. That’s the first reason why all my writings works possess a number of words between three hundred to four hundred. Nevertheless, there is also an additional purpose for why I write short texts. It is quite similar to photography. Even here, as with minimalistic photographs, we can say that less is more. I will paraphrase one of the Dhammapada’s (it is one of the most widely read and best known Buddhist scriptures) quotes.

Even though writing possesses a thousand words, but is made up of senseless words, one word of sense is better, which if a man will read, he becomes quiet.

Is that mean that long texts are wrong? Of course not. Fyodor Dostoyevski, one of the most excellent writers in history, wrote many very long novels. In all his books, every word has sense. He was simply a master of the artistry of writing.

Nevertheless, today we have the XXI century, and most of us read many things on smartphones.

I cannot imagine reading Dostoyevski’s novels on a laptop or iPhone (Kindle is an exception). Thus, my texts are short because they are adjusted for the reader of the XXI century, who usually do not have much time to read long posts and articles on the internet. Also, I believe that it is a real art to put the ideas of your thoughts into three hundred words. I know that a lot of themes could be described in very excellent writing, but I believe that writing short texts is also writing artistry. What about you, my Dear Friend? Do you try to compress your thoughts into short paragraphs?
