What does it mean to be a free artist?

April 9, 2026 by Adam Mazek

Today (I wrote this text on the 24th of October, 2025), I will try to explain what it means to be a free artist for me.

Today, I was walking in heavy rain at 12 p.m. I had a day off from my office job, so I decided to use the additional free time to take a walk and do street photography. I took 9k steps and took almost one hundred pictures. While walking, I saw tens of people running away from the rain, as it would have hurt them. It was pretty cold (10 degrees Celsius [50 degrees Fahrenheit]), and the fact that I was wholly wet made me feel that the temperature was much lower. Of course, I put on myself summer clothes (including the www.adammazek.com t-shirt). While walking and getting wet, I felt tremendous joy: joy of walking and having the possibility of freely expressing myself by taking pictures on Warsaw’s streets.

It was a moment when I realized I was a free artist.

After all, I do not think about money when I walk and do street photography, or when I write a new text, like this one. This fact also gives me a lot of freedom in my creative endeavors. Still, symbolically, for me, the essence of liberty is walking. I love the opportunity of being able to walk wherever I want. While thinking about it, often The Beatles’ song (“You Never Give Me Your Money”) and Paul McCartney’s magical voice appear in my mind:

But oh, that magic feeling, nowhere to go.

For me, this text means I can go wherever I want and take photographs of almost whatever I want. It means to be a free artist for me. Also, the ability to write whatever I want is an essence of artistic freedom. I can express myself freely, without any distractions or borders, and this possibility is what makes me enthusiastic about each day.
