In today’s text (I wrote it on the 2nd of March, 2026), I will try to explain why art matters.
Undoubtedly, both street photography and writing can be considered broadly defined art. I have been doing both things for many years (to be more precise, I started doing street photography in October 2015, and I started writing in a foreign language in May 2017). Can I name myself an artist? Of course, I am. I believe each human has something from art in their soul. Still, many people do not discover and develop their artistic talent and potential. That’s sad but true. But why art matters? I believe art mattered since cavemen started to paint animals, stars, and abstract figures in caves; art matters today, and will matter for humankind until its final days. Art relates to creating and evoking feelings.
These feelings do not have to be always nice and pleasant.
Sometimes, they can be disturbing. Still, creating something out of nothing, something that will touch other people’s souls, is one of the most beautiful and fundamental activities that make us humans and differentiates us from animals. I create, therefore I am. I cannot imagine my life without walking, taking pictures in mundane areas, and writing. Even though I oftentimes do not have anything special to say, or I do not take great photos each time I walk among Warsaw’s streets, I believe in the creative process.
It makes me feel alive. It makes me feel I want more. My curiosity about my world only strengthens. The same is with “consuming” art. I love art books. Taschen is one of the best publishing houses. Their books are art in themselves. The more I read and contemplate those books, the more I desire to create something new. I believe it’s a never-ending process, and I hope to be in this creative spiral until my final days.
