My dream is to eat, drink, and sleep the passion. One of the quotes provided in the Taschen book, “The Stanley Kubrick Archives,” inspired me to write this post.
Who was the author of the quotation? Douglas Milesome, who had been John Alcott’s camera assistant on a “Clockwork Orange” and “The Shining.” Later on, he “graduated” to become Stanley Kubrick’s cinematographer on “Full Metal Jacket” movie. Like Douglas Milesome, I would like to eat, drink, and sleep, if not my artistic hobby, so it is with one of Kubrick’s movies. The fact is that my dream is to eat, drink, and sleep with passion. Oh, I forgot, here is the quotation:
I’ve actually had a much harder time working with a lot less talented people than Stanley Kubrick. He’s a drain because he saps you dry, but he works damn hard himself and expects everybody else too… You eat, drink, and sleep the movie, and you’re under contract to Stanley’s body and soul. But he allows you the time to get everything absolutely right, which is what I find so rewarding.
After reading the quote, I always feel a little bit sad that I will never experience working with such a genius like Stanley Kubrick. His movies are so memorable, and, undoubtedly, they will be watched by future generations for many, many centuries. Like we see, working with Stanley, without a doubt, was an exhausting experience. Nevertheless, I am convinced that such marvelous actors like Kirk Douglas, Jack Nicholson, or Tom Cruise never regretted working so hard with one of the most outstanding geniuses of the cinema. Indeed, I would also like to live, eat, drink, and sleep the passion. Devoting your life to an idea, to which you believe in 100% because you are the idea, is one of the aims of my life. For me, my artistic passion is like oxygen, without which I could not breathe.
