Did I read anything that Arthur Schopenhauer wrote? Unfortunately no. Nevertheless, the famous German philosopher brought me inspiration to write this post.
Last time I read in Taschen’s “The Copy Book” exciting quotation. Arthur Schopenhauer was the one who gave this statement to the world. What was the quote? It was something like this:
We forfeit 3/4 of ourselves to be like other people.
When I read it, I realized that I was forfeiting myself for most of my life to become someone I did not want to be.
“But what exactly does it mean?” – undoubtedly, you would ask, my Dear Friend.
It means that I unconsciously wanted to be an artist for most of my life. I wanted to be someone who creates both photographs and texts, but I was convinced that becoming an artist is only for people who have made art since childhood. Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador were the ones who were creating art since their adolescence.
Also, I was sure that if I did not start to paint, write, and so on in my childhood, I would have no chance to become an artist.
Now I see that I was wrong. Every one of us can become an artist. It is only up to us when we start making something from nothing. The artists do not necessarily are born with the statement written on their forehead: “Hey, I am an artist!” Today, I believe that complex, creative work is the central aspect that makes us artists. Of course, if you are talented, there is a high possibility that you will achieve success. Talent is essential in some parts of art (e.g., singing).
But even talented people, without hard-working, won’t accomplish the aim of becoming an artist.
I want to make you aware, my Dear Friend, that we all can create art, even today. But what is art? I already wrote about it in my previous posts. Click here to see it.
In conclusion, I want to stress that you should be someone you genuinely want to be. Start writing today if you dream of becoming, e.g., a writer. Remember also that it is the Schopenhauer who first already wrote it. Ask yourself a simple question: what do I genuinely want to do in my life?
For today, I want to read Arthur Schopenhauer’s works. I am convinced that it is worth getting to know them.
